100 iconic internet videos

// April 14th, 2009 // No Comments » // Funnies, Video

A few years ago I mentioned that the Numa Numa video was undoubtedly one of those ‘laughing so much the coffee came through my nose’ clips.

The team over at Urlesque listed the top 100 iconic internet videos that made us laugh so much we cried and perhaps, just perhaps, changed the internet as we know it. Admittedly I don’t recognise all of the videos on the list, but here are some of my favourites below.

80. Bill O’Reilly Flips Out (We’ll Do It Live!)
39. The Two Talking Cats
20. The Evolution of Dance
17. Diet Coke and Mentos Eruption
13. OK Go, ‘Here It Goes Again’ Treadmill Video
11. Numa Numa
10. Sneezing Baby Panda
1. Star Wars Kid

Geez it cracks me up every time.

Update: Turns out that it was four years, almost to the day, that I first blogged about the Numa Numa phenomenon. Remarkable.

iPhone applications

// April 13th, 2009 // 1 Comment » // iPhone

My iPhone recently had to go back to Vodacom for an issue with the vibrate button. The thing broke off after only 2 months out the box. Something that’s completely unacceptable. Unfortunately the only thing to do was to book it in at Vodaworld, figuring it will be resolved fairly quickly.

In the initial three days I received a few messages informing me of the progress of the job, until it had to be sent back to the supplier. Around two-and-a-half weeks of silence ensued before I was finally notified that it was ready for collection. As expected (and welcomed), they exchanged the phone with a new unit.

One thing I must commend Apple on is how well the restore function works. Surprisingly enough it restored every setting, archived sms and application back to the last known state. Pretty amazing, considering I’ve never been able to do so with my Windows Mobile phones.

Funny thing about restoring your phone is that you notice how much nonsense you had on there in the first place. I took the opportunity to do some housekeeping and removed some unwanted / unused applications.

Below is a list of some of the more oft used (and mostly free) applications still on my phone.

    Photography

  • Flickit – Flickr uploader
  • PanoLab – Capture panoramic images
    Productivity

  • Discover – Mobile file manager
  • Road Trip – Best travel logbook application by far
    Social Networking

  • Brightkite – Location based networking
  • Facebook – What? Never heard of Facebook? Welcome to earth.
  • Fring – Instant messaging across multiple services
  • LinkedIn – Professional networking
  • Skype – Free calls and instant messages
  • Twitterfon – Twitter client
  • Twitterrific – Twitter client

Unfortunately some of the better apps in the iTunes App Store are still not available to South Africans, so we’ll have to make do for now. But here’s the question, are there other apps out there that I should have on my phone? What do you have on yours?

Can I still eat this?

Eat it or toss it

Picture this. You’re eating your favourite chocolate bar. Just as you take your next bite, a big piece breaks off and falls to the floor. What do you do? Shout something like “five-second rule“, pick it up and pop that sucker in your mouth or do you toss it?

Unfortunately those of us keen to pick it up without thinking twice about the possibility of contamination are in for a bit of a surprise. An episode of MythBusters (and a scientific study) indicated that even a 2 second exposure carries a risk of collecting bacteria.

Food falling on the floor is one thing. What about that pizza you left out overnight, is it still safe to eat? According to the website StillTasty.com it might be a bad idea to eat that too.

The website is very informative with shelf life information on various food groups (opened and unopened) and answers a fridge-load full of questions ranging from the best ways to defrost food to all you need to know about expiry dates.

Very interesting stuff.
