    I saw it! If I had to guess what caused it…. the saem concept as a rainbow, but at night. Light refracting through the clouds (it wasn’t a perfectly clear night).

  2. It could be a sheet of ice or ice particles high up refracting the light from the moon. I’ve seen a similar thing with the sun in winter in Jo’burg

    Hey Quentin and Colin…I think you’re right.

    The ring around the Moon is caused by the refraction of Moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. The shape of the ice crystals results in a focusing of the light into a ring.
