Moth on Fire

After reading what Dror said about f/8 at 1/250 I was intent on looking a lot closer at my camera settings before I fire away.
This one was taken at f/2.8 – which I think looks pretty cool – but is it better than the f/8 one below? Admittedly though – we’re not comparing apples with apples if you consider the composition is different and the above picture was taken at 1/3 versus the one below at 1 sec.
Which one looks better?

I did indeed say that, but I’d like to add a rider to that statement that in order to maximise the benefit of using a aperture of f2.8 the image you are using needs to have depth.
Basically if you’re going to shoot a painting on a wall, it doesn’t matter what f-stop you use because it’s all on a single plane. If you’re shooting a portrait it definately does, because a person’s face has depth.
