What On Earth

// April 11th, 2007 // Interesting, Photos // 21,858 views

…or more importantly, what in the heavens? On the way home from work last night (just before 7pm) I spotted a very bright celestial object in the sky.

With no shining moon or stars to speak of (which was kinda eerie), this object stood out in the night time sky. At first I thought it was an aeroplane or even one of these tall cranes you see around Sandton, but alas, that theory was discounted quite quickly.

Which therefore leads me to assume then that it was either a rocket, satellite or even the space station.

The guys at Heavens Above have daily predictions for all satellites brighter than magnitude, iridium flares and the International Space Station that can be viewed in our area.

Based on the time of the photo (around 19:14), my relative position etc. I would venture a guess that this could have been the Cosmos 2360 Rocket.

Maybe, maybe not…anyone have any ideas?

I uploaded the original pics on flickr (around 3.5MB each) to zoom in real close. Even with a tripod, countdown timer etc. the pics seem to have picked up a bit of camera shake.

    In a back-wood, pekkerhead. hillbilly accent: “I done seen it wiff muh own two eyeeesss”.

    Very odd though. Very odd. The only rockets I’m used to seeing are the ones that go bang just over the wall so I dont really care to see any more.

    Be interesting to find it. Was it just sitting still watching you?
