Mentos, Coke and Kari Byron

// October 30th, 2006 // 6 Comments » // Interesting, NSFW

You’d probably wonder what Mentos mints, Coke and Kari Byron have in common? One word Mythbusters!

Definitely one of my favourite shows, although the reruns are getting a tad boring…unless you ignore the actual Mythbusting and stare at the lovely Kari Byron instead. So without further ado, allow me to introduce Kari Byron to you.

Kari Byron - Mythbusters

An avid fencer, knife thrower, scuba-diver, stand in mannequin (to foil shoplifters you see) and artist has seen Kari holding successful exhibitions at some of San Francisco’s leading galleries.

Her sculpting skills led her into the world of model-making and toy-prototyping: a job with Jamie Hyneman at M5 Industries. It was here that Kari got her first big break with the Mythbusters team.

Interestingly though, during the “vacuum toilet” segment of one of the first episodes (which examined whether a person could get suctioned into an airline toilet), Jamie needed a 3-D scan of a person’s backside, and Kari had the right … well, you know. View Kari’s perfect derriere.

But I’m digressing again. Back to the original story of the Mentos and Coke. Some of you may or may not know that Mentos (the chewy mints) and Coke = one helluva explosion (as Kari explains).

The recipe for disaster is very easy.
1. a 2-litre bottle of Coke
2. one pack of Mentos (guess spearmint and peppermint will work equally well)

Open the Coke bottle and place on the floor. Drop the whole pack of Mentos into the bottle and stand back. The epic eruption will be instantaneous. Be prepared to mop up everything after it blows – cos it’s all going to be one sticky mess.

Apparently the reason for this reaction is that Mentos contains a chemical known as ARABIC GUM (this is the ingredient that makes the mint “chewy”). This ingredient causes the surface tension of the water molecules to break even more easily, releasing more carbon dioxide gas at an astounding rate! …..The gas causes pressure to rapidly build inside the bottle which thrusts the soda upwards in a wonderful fountain-like BLAST!”

If that wasn’t enough Mentos themselves have wholeheartedly embraced the Mentos fountain and now have a contest up at http://www.mentosgeyser.com.

OH…Did I mention that Kari is quite hot? Thanks to the boys at FHM US for the following…

South Park On The Edge

// October 29th, 2006 // 8 Comments » // Interesting

South ParkLove them or hate them, but the creators of “South Park”, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, have made the animated series one of the biggest hits on TV today. CNN recently did a writeup on how these two succeeded in creating an award-winning show.

Then also, the Salami wonders if they have gone just a tad too far. Something to do with the latest Steve Irwin stingray clip.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with this little pearl of widom from the creators on how they keep a comic edge: “Always push the boundaries of taste. It’s a total charge for us to say, ‘Look what we got on TV. That’s awesome!’”

Volvo helmet - Please try

The much awaited Auto Africa motor show is finally here and I was lucky enough to crack a nod to the preview days. With my VIP pass and camera in tow, I set off to Nasrec on Friday, feeling a bit like a kid in a candy store.

I was looking forward to three vehicles in particular, the Volvo C30 Hatch, Volvo C70 Convertable and of course the Hummer H3 pictured below.
