The Letter A

Ahh right, the lovely little game of tag and now I’m it. Not exactly sure where this started, but I got tagged by Rox, who was tagged by Daedalus, who sort of re-tagged himself but who was initially tagged by Kuier, who was tagged by acidicice, who was….(anyway, you get the picture).

So I have to come up with 10 words that start with the letter A. Sounds easy enough – so here goes…

Aquila – The Eagle has always been a bird of kings, and is found frequently on heraldic signs, shields of warriors, banners and flags. Aquila is the eagle who flies higher than any other creature and has the sharpest vision.

Apple – It has been said that one of these a day would keep the doctor away. The one piece of fruit (of the species Malus domestica in the rose family Rosaceae) that got mankind into serious trouble and the name of Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin’s baby daughter.

Andersen – Formerly known as Arthur Andersen, once one of the Big Five accounting firms until a Texas-based energy company called Enron came along and changed the face of corporate governance forever. Can you say fraud and corruption?

Alive – The opposite of being dead. Also the name of a live album released by metal/punk/funk band Snot in 2002. Enough said?

Actuator – A subdivision of transducers, devices which transform an input signal (mainly an electrical signal) into motion. Think electrical motors and relays.

Aphrodisiac – From Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. A term used for a substance that arouses or increases sexual desire. Hmmm oysters, chocolate…

ASCII – Abbreviation for American Standard Code for Information Interchange. ASCII codes represent text in computers, communications equipment, and other devices that work with text. The similey face is an example of ASCII text. Some people even create artworks from these characters.

Aurora – Also known as the northern lights (aurora borealis). Aurora was the goddess of the dawn in Roman mythology.

Artois – Former province of Norther France, bounded by Flanders and Picardie. Stella Artois is a lager first brewed in Leuven, Belgium in 1926 as a Christmas brew, and named Stella after the Latin for “star”. Colloquially known as Stella or “wifebeater”, it is the best selling premium lager in the UK beer market.

Ass – Ass, from Old English assa, ultimately from Latin asinus, is the older word for donkey. Figuratively used as a term to describe an idiot and a German generic term for Aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid).
