Garmin Nuvi

Just like Tripeak I have this wee condition when it comes to gadget shopping… Once I get my mind set on something, it’ll drive me slightly crazy untill I actually go out and get whatever I’ve set my sights on.

In this case it was the Garmin Nüvi 300 portable GPS navigator, traveler’s reference, and digital entertainment system, all in one.

This little wonder is about the size of a deck of playing cards which means it can be carried around in your pocket.

The main functionality includes automatic routing calculation with turn-by-turn instructions; custom road preferences, a detour function to get you around traffic problems, an automatic offroute recalc that shows how to get back on track if you miss a turn or exit and it has the ability to store custom Speed Trap Proximity Warnings.

Some additiona features include an MP3 player, audio book player (for Audible.com media), JPEG picture viewer, world travel clock with time zones, currency converter, measurement converter and calculator. It also supports the Garmin Travel Guide and Garmin Language Guide software packages as well as the GTM 10 FM TMC traffic receiver, which allows users to avoid traffic tie-ups by simply pushing a button that will calculate a new route.

Charged up and maps loaded, my first experience with the unit can simply be described as euphoric. Lucky for me I have a couple of meetings around JHB and Pretoria over the next few days, so I can’t wait to put this baby through it’s paces….watch this space for more.

oh fck I missed that part on the Discovery discount thing. I got mine from the friendly guys in Sandton (forget name will insert later). Anyhow got a bit of a discount too and paid R5k on the dot. About R500 cheaper than Cape Union Mart.

PS If you buy any GPS in SA after 1 April you Qualify for a free uprade to the SA Streetmaps V 4

In the past I had a TomTom Go 300. Was pretty good except the maps were a bitch to upgrade, expensive and only availble for UK, Europe and North America (incl Canada). The ex left it in the car on the window and it got stolen (hence the ex – j/k). Im really in the market for a device that can offer good world maps including SA and major routes through Africa as well as the Europe and Americas option. Im not too interested whether or not it can play MP3, tell me Im now late cos Im stuck in traffic or make a cup of coffee…

damn – just lost the entire reply due to a dropped network connection…. so here it goes again.

Hoox – You’ve come to the right place – the Nuvi is perfect for what you’re looking for. A friend of mine has the Nuvi 350 with Bluetooth support blah blah – anyway, point is he has the UK, USA and SA maps loaded on to his unit. He travels quite a bit and he’s found the Nuvi indispensable for the following reasons:

1: easy to use and small enough to carry around in your pocket
2: loading up any map down to street level that you can throw at it
3: as an added bonus – the optional translation software has helped him to string a couple of sentences together in German and French whenever he needed it.

One other thing that is apparently quite cool is the setting to indicate what mode of transportation you’re using eg. car/bike/pedestrian etc. which makes calculating ETA a no-brainer.

I don’t think you can go wrong with the Nuvi as an option. Hope this helped….

What can I say? No flies on HooX. I may be slow off the starting blog but when I say I will get back to someone, I keep my word! Eventually, sometimes, maybe.
