Da Vinci Code A Bit Bland

// May 21st, 2006 // Movies // 3,292 views

I admitted some time last year that the Da Vinci Code book wasn’t that bad…but I hate to admit it, the movie was as bland as an unseasoned, steamed chicken breast.

Adding to the slight frustration was the fact that the doors to the theatre opened 15 minutes later than planned. There were way to many people in a confined space for my liking. Fast forward past the playing time for the trailers and the 2hr 30 min running time of the main feature and we only got to leave the cinema after 00:00, right in the middle of a JHB cold-front. But pleasantries aside….

Cherryflava pointed out that some critics were already throwing tomatoes at the film, prior to the big world-wide launch.

Speaking of Rotten Tomatoes, the movie and game review site of the same name also mentions that critics have reached consensus – “What makes Dan Brown’s novel a best seller is evidently not present in this dull and bloated movie adaptation…”.

Religious uprising aside, it probably won’t win tons of cinematic awards, but it will probably hit a high note at the box office.

    I haven’t read the Da Vinci code. It was too hyped, and sometimes that makes me suspicious…
    But, by all accounts, it’s the kind of book that should have translated effortlessly into a movie. I WAS going to watch the movie…but I guess now I’ll have to read the book. *sigh*

    Jam, I think you still need to go watch the movie – For people who have not read the book, but have heard of the hype, I’m sure it’ll make some sense. I think you need to go judge for yourself though.

    Watched the movie – didn’t read the book – didn’t get the HYPE. :P now X-men III > looking 4ward to that one!

  4. Aquila says:

    Yeah – also looking forward to Superman Returns…not sure about our lead, but hey – mindless entertainment?

    What did you think of the movie though Tripeak?

  5. tripeak says:

    I thought it was okay… but I didn’t think that it was anything other that just another story… ie. not really understanding the hype. + Not too sure if i would have casted Tom Hanks in the lead.

    haven’t seen it, didn’t read the book- personally i think da vinci must be turning in his grave… and it probably will break a box office or six because everyone wants to know what the hype is about!

  7. [...] Sadly, I’m not the only one who did not find it very exciting. I usually don’t care about reviews, but I have to agree with them on this one, it was really 2:30 hours of dragging on just to ensure as much of the book is covered, that’s what it seemed like to me. [...]

    Read the book… and found it a good read. Will not be watching the movie. Definately has to do with Tom Hanks being the lead.
    Not sure the movie alows one to ponder the gravity of the religious issues raised… and that to me was the big appeal of the book.
