What Are You Playing On Your PSP

So I finally got a PSP (as a gift mind you) a few weeks ago. Not to waste any time, I promptly popped over to the local Look & Listen and got myself a game and a music UMD to test out the functionality.

Firstly I got Need for Speed: Most Wanted, in a bid to become the most notorious and elusive street racer. Indeed, this version is somewhat different from the PS2 version, but its still fun and challenging at the same time.
Pity about the daft police vehicles crashing into each other at times.
Anyhow, to test the DVD/UMD functionality I opted for Kylie Minogue’s Showgirl, a stunning performance of all her greatest hits. Kylie looks absolutely stunning on the small screen – and being available in portable format, you can just imagine some of the possibilities and venues one can utilise/view this show.
But I’m digressing. I’ve figured out the Wifi bit, played around with converting some movies to the memory stick and have dabbled a bit in the photo and music capabilities. Now I’m lost on what games to get on this baby. Some of the reviews published in G.E.A.R. magazine (inserted in PCFormat and T3 at present) have been somewhat helpful, but I’m looking for your feedback. I think it’s always better to get the low-down from you guys and gals out there playing the games on the PSP.
So here it is, which games are you playing, are some of the titles worthwile and what are you looking forward to?
Personally I think The Godfather should be interesting. I mean, who wouldn’t want to rule the streets of New York with brutal violence, skillful diplomacy, or a cunning mixture of both?
You can call me Don Aquila from now on, capiche?

Congrats with the purchase of yr new toy! Now you know what to get when you win that Media24 Blog Awards grand prize… more games (seeing as they’re so expensive)
-
Hey Wez, now that’s a damn good option – downloading and installing is a bit of a pain in the ass, but if you want good content, I guess it’s the price to pay?
Tripeak, thanks – lucky for me it was a gift, but indeed, the games, movies and music discs are hellishly expensive.
Let’s hope the Media24 thing comes through.

I’m still waiting to get bored of GTA, but that could happen at any second

Got mine in December when in Hong Kong for Cheaper Cheaper.
Bought Burnout Legends, GTA, Socom Bravo and The Con.
I have “clocked” Socom and The Con, two really good games. The Con is a fighting game which I actually really enjoyed although not as critically acclaimed as Socom Bravo Navy Seals.
Socom was awesome BUT it is a bit easy to finish and then you may as well chuck it away ‘cos how many people really use the wifi multi player function?!
Burnout is OK, there aren’t many better car games on PSP, but I still think Toca is a better game.
GTA, what can I say, I have been playing it for over 2 months and I’m still only 40% thru!!! Awesome game!
I will probably only put GTA down when The Godfather comes out. Personally I hope its more like The Getaway than GTA but we’ll see!

Interesting views. It looks like GTA is a clear must-have.
I found that Socom on the PS2 was a tad difficult (also because I probably haven’t played it for long enough), so I’ve been a bit reluctant to go for any type of shooter game on the portable version. Guessing that The Godfather will probably involve some hand-to-hand combat – I may need to change my stance on this one.
Regarding the wifi connection – I’ve been able to race a few laps via the NFS online multiplayer option. Response times were pretty good, not awesome, but good enough. Pity though that you can only choose cars that you’ve unlocked – which makes it slighly pointless to race a golf against a gallardo.

Depends what games you like! My fav is Ridge Racer – the port is incredible: great sense of speed and cool soundtrack. Wipeout Pure is not bad. I tend not to like the EA driving games! Stupid AI and bad controls!

Gerard, wma support comes with the PSP Firmware 2.6 upgrade. I’m assuming you have not updated your firmware yet? (http://www.yourpsp.co.za)
System software should sort you out with version 2.8. Oh and take your power cord with – you cannot do the update without it.PS: the settings for Mugg and Bean is actually very simple – everything should be set to automatic infrastructure mode. You should be able to pick it up, but then there is a cost at Mugg and Bean for Wifi Access.
I’ve found that some McDonalds stores (Sandton in particular) offer free wifi access – and it’s a peach to set up

If you’re on firmware 2.81? then you should have wma support installed.
Have you checked that the setting is set to on? i.e. system settings, enable wma playback?
then – re the flash bit, I found this:
1.Fist update to firmware version 2.70 (or later)
2.Create a folder on your PSP called Flash. Put this in the root folder of your PSP memory stick.
3.Transfer your swf file into this PSP folder.
4.Go to the internet on your PSP and put in this address: file:/psp/flash/(name of file).swfagain, if you have 2.8 or later then this is already on, so I guess it has something to do with the WMA file and the location of the flash files on your PSP. My guess….

I bought mine early Jan. Have mostly been using it for viral videos I download daily and for reading specifically formatted magazines (FHM, MAXIM, Playboy, Hust… the list continues) and cartoons. Have only bought one game so far Burnout Legends, great game although havn’t played it in weeks got slightly bored.
