Move Over Golf GTi – Here Comes The Volvo C30

Finally an offering from Volvo that may just put the likes of the Golf GTi and Audi A3 to shame. Volvo has unveiled its C30 small hatch at the Detroit motor show and it has been billed as a sporty compact Design Concept.
According to iAfrica (via link above) it’s powered from 0-100km/h in a claimed six seconds by a 194kW, five-cylinder, 2.4-litre engine producing 350Nm of torque at 2100rpm.
Interior styling resembles that of the S40, as does some of the exterior design cues.
Personally I’m not too fond of the glass hatch or the “brown” styling, but I’m assuming that these will be ironed out of the production model.
I think this model is definitely going to be a contender, probably not in units sold, but in power and sheer individualism for sure.
Additionally, Top Gear has a small review while the Volvo C30 Teaser campaign some spy pictures and a premature release of the pictures was noted.

Good point – How much is the Toyota Prius thingymabob?
-
Apparently you can’t actually own one – you rent it from Toyota for 4 years at around R4,800 per month, then it reverts to their ownership again.
Strange, nasty, but true.
I think I may have to build my own.

Ouch!!
I remember reading something about the Hydrogen Hybrid from BMW, but that was hellishly expensive as it was based on a 7-series or something.
I believe Audi was also playing around with a hydrogen version.

I stand corrected – just ran into some Toyotoa blokes with the new Yaris at the mall. You CAN own it, and it costs a “mere” R284,000… I guess you can either buy a house, or buy a car and live in it.
I still think I’ll try build my own.
Honda, Citroen and a few others are bringing out hybrids here next year, but again you won’t find anything under R200,000. Way beyond any budget I may ever possess. Ah well.

All good and well – but when are we going to get affordable hybrids?
