R300 A Photograph

Hmm, what a surprise to find a nondescript letter in the post this week, informing me that the Ekurhuleni Metro have gratuitously decided to take a digital pic of my vehicle, travelling down the N12 the other day, and that I should now pay them R300 bucks for the service.

So on further investigation into the letter, they present you with a reference number, which you have to use with your vehicle registration number on this website and boom – there’s your car’s picture for download.

But wait, there’s more. Along with your car’s picture you get some other nifty particulars, such as the exact location, date, time (up to the second) and quite ingeniously, the speed at which you were travelling.

There are just two things that bug me. Firstly, that they don’t ask your permission before taking the picture and secondly, the cost. I mean, really, R300 is a bit steep for just a rear-view picture of my car? Not to mention that they tend to crop it a bit on the left hand side.

Guess it warrants another trip to Alberton to go pay my dues.

Gotta love Metro though.

Bwhahahaha…. they took a picture of my car as well. I do think they over-charged you a bit. My bill was only R100 :)

It probably was a bargain, considering that they probably had to use a camera with a high shutter speed. Not bad going at 145km/h.

I got caught in PTA a while ago… had to drive to Centurion to go pay the damn fine (wasn’t able to do it electronically). So I asked for a reduction (which they sometimes do) and the guy looked at the photo, smiled… and told me that seeing as I drive a sports hatch … I could afford it.

I’ve realised that fines in SA are nothing compared to the US. I got $40 for having my $2 parking metre run out, and I was 5 mins late!

Then there’s the $1000 fines for littering on the freeways… 1000 bucks!!!!!
