Cars Banned In JHB For A Day

// September 21st, 2005 // News // 2,507 views

This may just become a reality on the 20th of October if a report in the Rosebank Killarney Gazette is anything to go by.

The article published on page 2 for the edition ending Sept 23, entitled Joburg bans cars for a day, states:

“No cars will be allowed on Johanneburg roads on October 20. This was revealed at the Randburg property owners’ meeting last week by a city consultant. According to the plan, cars will be barred from accessing major public roads on that day.
Chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar of Metro police said offers from Gautrans, SA police and Metro police will be out in full force to enfore the Joburg car-free day.

…We want to ensure that by 2010 residents of Joburg are familiar with public transport…”

I would agree with Ali Chicktay, constitutional law lecturer who commented that “should this be compulsory, it would be a voilation of various rights, including movement, trade and occupation and property.”

Just imagine the impact something like this will have on the economy – everyone stranded for a day. Our public transport is definitely not up to scratch and I have no doubt that it will not be able cope with the additional number of commuters, should something like this be instituted.

The topic of a car-free city seems to be going strong since 1997. Hardly attainable though.

The guys from Joblog may just survive this day – they can use their Segways for transport.

Watch this space.

it sounds like a good idea but you’d think they would tell the us about public transport first.
as a white guy who’s always driven everywhere, I know nothing about taxi’s.

knowing my luck, when I try catch a taxi, I’d point my finger down and this would actually mean take me to Durban and not fourways.
plus being a big guy I’d probably be charged double.

I’m with you on that one bigric…

My taxi signs are so rusty, I may just be sending dimensions on playmate of the year.

Up to now I’ve tried to steer clear of taxi’s – imagine how I’m going to battle to actually catch one.

I really don’t think that it is possible to survive in JHB without a car for a day, the public transport system really needs work.

I guess I could simply stay at home…

So gaan jy my vat vir ‘n romantiese perdrit deur die stad?
    Kan nie wag nie!!

ek wag nog steeds om te hoor van die romantiese perdrit???

  6. My BS alarm goes of when I read crap like this. There are bigger, far more important things that need to be dealt with than barring cars from major roads in Johannesburg(even for a day!). Even with a car I hardly go to the the city center unless I absolutely have to.
    Misplaced sentiments!

Can you think what the roads will be like if there are only TAXIS and no other cars, the roads will be come race tracks. No law whatsoever.. If the government can put police out on the roads TO STOP US USEING OUR CARS, why can’t the put police out TO PUT THE LAW UPON THE TAXIS???

I have been hit by taxis on too many occasions. Of coarse it’s not every single taxi driver. I do see the occasional guy that waits his turn. At least when the roads are clear on the 20th they won’t have to take shortcuts across pavements! I should have taken photos. The city of Joburg should send all these drivers on an advanced driving coarse (Let’s hope they actually have their driver’s license…) to make sure they know what they are doing behind the wheel of a vehicle carrying passengers. I’ll get in a taxi when I am convinced the drivers can drive. I’ll rather take a bus thank you very much.

    WHAT A JOKE!!!

If the goverment had a public transport system in place then maybe, but currently you would be lucky to get to work the same day as leaving home.

Lets get a tram / train / underground system first – that unlike the taxis won’t be a case of risking life and limb!

OR maybe all the free Merc’s the goverment got could be used as public transport!
