We’re Open

Well it’s the year 2005, which will hopefully bring with it loads of new beginnings and exciting experiences.
I may have one cellphone less (apparently playing catch with a cell is not so bright idea after all) and may have picked up a kilo or so over the festive season, but I think this year is the start of something great.
While I’m on the topic of cellphones – I’m due for an upgrade at the end of the month and any suggestions are welcomed. I was thinking of getting either the Nokia 9500 Communicator or the Sony Ericsson P910i, since Vodacom suddenly decided not to support the I-mate PDA-2K or the HP Ipaq H6340 on contract any more.
On the other hand, should I be an early adopter and go for one of the new 3G contracts while I have the chance? But then those new phones suck a little on the looks department.
Decisions, decisions.
On another note, if you’re in the JHB area, why not join us for the Jhb Blogging Dinner set for the 13th of January 2005. See you there!

I’d have to say go with the P910, I have used both the p800 and p900 and they are pretty cool. The thing with the new nokia communicator is that it’s only real feature worth talking about is the wifi, and there just arent enough hotspots around to make this feasable, the lack of predictive text blows too. There are reviews of both in this months T3 magazine.
If you can wait a bit, the treo650 is expected in March, could be a winner…!

I must agree, the WiFi capability of the Nokia is one of the major reasons why it’s an option. Also, the screen size makes viewing websites a bit easier - which, for one, means more effective blogging on the go.
I think the memory cards for the Nokia is a bit cheaper than the P910’s. Apparently a 1GB memory card can set you back over R5000 - that’s almost more than the phone itself.
As you pointed out, predictive text, the lack of adequate hotspots for wifi and compatibility for Mpeg- format video capture, makes the P910 a pretty good choice.
I must admit - Vodacom’s phone comparison tool was not very helpful. It missed quite a few features for both handsets.
