Apparently the local music industry is abuzz after Musica, the South African music store, launched South Africa’s first website (sic), offering downloadable music. More than 400,000 songs are already available on the website, with another 800,000 to be added within the next 3 months.
The biggest plus-point is that this service is 100% legal. The basic track price is R9.99, but you can get tracks from as little as R8.33 depending on the package you buy. Alternatively, you can listen to an entire track for only 10c per stream.
Tracks can be streamed or permanently downloaded in WMV and MP3 format and most tracks have a free 30-second sample available. This enables you to download a track to your PC and burn it to CD or transfer it to portable MP3/WMA player. To ‘burn’ the track to a CD, or transfer it to a portable player, one has to follow the media player instructions on the site’s FAQ.
I’ve picked up two snags though – Firstly, downloads cannot be transferred from one PC to another and Win NT, Win 95 and Macs are not supported.
