According to Highveld Stereo News: “Pretoria has a new plan to control traffic during rush hour periods. The city of Tshwane says the R2 million plan will colour code taxis to control their movement, pedestrianising certain streets and provide shuttles and trams. The plan forms part of an inner city regeneration project which includes gearing up to host some of the games in the 2010 Soccer World Cup.”
I’ve previously remarked that I’m not the greatest fan of our taxi services. In a bid to ‘control’ the movement of taxis the Tshwane metro want to colour code them? I think this is an extremely ambitious project since we can’t even keep track of them under normal conditions. I really don’t think that by merely colour coding a taxi will force a taxi driver to keep to only certain ‘designated’ routes.
Apart from purely visual colour coding, they should maybe put some sort of tracking device in the paint mixture so that these taxis can be monitored via satellite.
But until then, I’m inclined to say “Eish!”.
