SA Set For Second Total Lunar Eclipse

South Africa is set for its second total lunar eclipse in the same year, this Thursday.

According to Dave Laney, of the SA Astronomical Observatory, the penumbral phase, when the sunlight on the moon is partially blocked by the earth, will begin at 2.06am. “But if you want to see the first ‘bite’ into the moon, that will be later, and will begin at 3.14am. The moon will be completely inside the shadow between 4.23am and 5.45am. During this time the moon will look dim and copper-coloured to reddish, lit by the glowing red ring of the Earth’s atmosphere as seen from the moon,” Laney said.

Damn that’s early or is it late? I think I’ll set up my video camera to record this ‘historic’ event, while I catch some Zzz’s.

Karaoke On A Whole New Level

According to IOL, “A Hong Kong radio presenter hopes to have sung his way into the record books after singing karaoke for more than four days.

DJ Barry Yip spent 81 hours and 23 seconds singing 1 000 songs in the charity record bid. With just 15 seconds rest between each song and with the help of 63 local pop stars, including actress and singing superstar Kelly Chen, Yip also managed to raise R150 000 for the charity Oxfam.

Yip, a DJ for a local music station, had a doctor on hand to monitor his blood pressure and a lawyer to verify his record claim.”

Damn, I honestly hope that this guy could actually string two notes together. If I have to recall some of our own ‘attempts’ (Yes! You know you did this during your drunken student days too.), it probably was 81 gruelling hours of tone-deaf nastiness. Worthy cause though.

South African Diary Farmers Milk Open Source

// October 27th, 2004 // No Comments » // General

According to Tectonic, “South African dairy farmers are starting to use open source software to improve their farming techniques and outputs. ACS Online has developed a range of dairy farming-specific modules using PHP, Apache and MySQL running on Sun boxes with Solaris 9. The modules currently available include financial management, a sustainable pasture management system, livestock management and a performance analysis module which uses the Balanced Scorecard reporting technique.”

Nice to see this kind of innovation coming from our own shores, since it’s one of the important industries in the country.
